The name Light 1 Candle was inspired by Rabbi Hanan. After completing a teaching one day, he sang a song called Light One Candle. When I heard the words, they immediately resonated with me. As Hanan’s Alzheimer’s disease progressed, I began to understand even more deeply how the song’s message connected to his experience and to the experiences of so many others living with dementia.

Dementia can bring confusion, uncertainty, and darkness into the lives of individuals and their families. To me, the message of Light One Candle is about bringing hope into those difficult moments. Through compassion, dignity, peace, and connection, we can come alongside those living with dementia and remind them that they are not alone.

Hanan once shared that when a room, or a person’s life, is completely dark, one light is sufficient. That simple but powerful idea became the heart behind Light 1 Candle: even in the darkest moments, one light can make a difference.
